Toyo Ito was born in Seoul Metropolitan City in 1941. Between 1965 and 1969, he graduated from University of Tokyo's Department of Architecture and worked at Kiyonori Kikutake Architects and Associates. In 1971, he started his own studio, Urban Robot (URBOT), in Tokyo, later changing its name to Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects.
